School History

Our Lady of Angels School, located in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn has been educating boys and girls for eighty four years. The school first opened its doors to three hundred fifty students on September 8, 1924. Since then, thousands of graduates have made outstanding contributions to the secular and spiritual life of our society.  This legacy has been passed to the present student body.

The school began with four grades, eight classes, four lay teachers and six Sisters of Charity of Halifax. The first principal was Sister M. Clarissa Conlon. This first graduation took place in June, 1928.

Because of the large number of students, the Franciscan Brothers came to teach the boys of Grades 6, 7, 8 in 1958. A new addition was added to the school in that year holding classrooms, a science lab, library, gymnasium, cafeteria, and administrative offices. The first principal of the Boys Department was Brother Jerome, OSF. In 1980, the Boys and Girls Department became one unit again under the leadership of Brother Robert Gabriel, OSF. Mrs. Dorothy La Mere served as principal from 1992-1998.

Presently, OLA School enrolls students from Early Childhood to Eighth Grade. We are known for the quality education which we offer. In 1991, we received accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and School, a prestigious accomplishment. This accreditation was renewed in 2001. The graduating class of 2007 received numerous awards in the form of scholarships and academic incentive awards. We offer a full program in computer education, art, music, physical education, and library science. Spanish is taught to Eighth Grade. We prepare our students to know the truths of the Catholic Faith.

OLA School participates in local events such as the Ragamuffin Parade, the Bay Ridge St. Patrick's Day Parade, and activities sponsored by the Bay Ridge Community Council, such as essay and Art decorating contests.

We have an active Home School Association. The Executive Board consists of nine energetic members who foster the integration of home and school.

The present pastor of Our Lady of Angels Parish is Reverend James E. Devlin. The principal of the school is Sister Elizabeth Schroeder, CSJ. They have both been vital parts of OLA since 1998. Our present faculty and staff number twenty-two.
